Walmart to Offer Subscription Service

According to a recent Internet Retailer article, the retail chain Walmart will launch a subscription service called Goodies sometime next month. While the company has yet to reveal many details of the new program, it sounds like subscribers will receive monthly shipments of food and “artisanal” items. The items would be a picked by Walmart each month and would remain a mystery to the consumer until the box arrives.

Besides the opportunity to re-enact the movie “Seven” every month, Goodies is one more example of Walmart’s attempt to catch up with its e-commerce rivals. Amazon offers a subscription service as do specialty e-tailers such as Birchbox Inc, Citrus Lane, and JustFabulous.

Two analysts interviewed by Internet Retailer also believe the Goodies is an attempt by Walmart to lure customers interested in high-end, expensive products.

“It would be an interesting way to identify customers who are interested in higher-end products,” Nikki Baird, managing partner at research and advisory firm Retail Systems Research said.”Walmart has long been trying to attract and retain those customers.”
